Show Your Shop Catalog by Category and Subcategory

The WooCommerce Nested Category Layout extension allows you to show products organized by category and sub-category on the shop and catalogue pages. By breaking products up by subcategory, this plugin provides an intuitive and attractive catalogue layout that your customers will appreciate.

WooCommerce typically allows you to show subcategories on shop and category pages (or subcategories and products, but this can look messy).

However, the more barriers you put in the way of finding a product or purchasing, the more likely customers are to leave your site, so we?ve sought to fix that with this plugin. Nested Category Layout cleans this process up and makes it simpler for the user. Instead of requiring customers to click through categories, then subcategories to get to products, it simply creates a list on the shop and/or category pages organized by category/subcategory, then allows customers to click a category/subcategory title if they want to see more products.

You can select which categories to nest and which to display normally and determine whether to show this layout on shop pages and category pages or just on category pages. Want to see this in action? You can check out the Demo Shop that has the plugin running to get a feel for how the shop and catalogue pages are changed.

What does Nested Category Layout do?

  • Increase customer satisfaction and sales with an intuitive layout that separates products by subcategory
  • Select which category pages to alter, and which to render as normal
  • Easily configure the number of products per subcategory to display on the shop and catalogue pages
  • Known compatibility with WooCommerce Themes and the Genesis Framework
  • The flexible, overridable architecture allows customization and support for additional themes and frameworks

Flexible Display

Don?t have a category for a product? No problem ? Nested Category Layout will show these products at the top of the page, then show your categories and subcategories. If a product is in both the parent category and a subcategory, it will be displayed with the appropriate subcategory.

How are Categories Displayed?

There are a few ways you can categorize products, so here are some helpful hints into how Nested Category Layout will display them:

  • No Category ? If a product is not categorized, it will be displayed first on the shop page (with other products that lack a category), then products with categories/subcategories will be displayed after it.
  • One Product in Category ? If only one product is present in the category, it will be displayed first on the shop page (with the products that lack a category), then products with categories/subcategories will be displayed after it.
  • Only in Parent Category?? If a product belongs to a parent category but not to a subcategory, then the product will be displayed under the parent category name. Any products in this category that also belong to subcategories will be displayed after it with the appropriate subcategory.
  • In a Subcategory?? If a product belongs to a subcategory (even if it also belongs to a parent category), then it will be displayed with that subcategory in the nested list. In the image above, take the ?Pilsner Glasses? for example. These glasses belong to both ?Home? and the Home subcategory, ?Drinkware?. They are displayed under ?Drinkware? since they belong to a subcategory. All products only under ?Home? do not belong to any subcategory.

Note that subcategory names become links to the subcategory page so that customers can easily drill down the catalogue to find what they need. This is true of category names on the Shop page as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if a subcategory has its own sub-subcategory? (Now we?re going down a rabbit hole!)
A: This plugin supports multiple nested categories. Let?s use the examples above and say I have a ?Home? parent category with a ?Drinkware? subcategory. What if the ?Drinkware? subcategory has its own subcategories ? say ?Mugs? and ?Glassware??

Q: Can I change the order that the categories or subcategories display in?
A: Yes! This is actually a core feature of WooCommerce. If you go to Products > Categories to view your category list, you can actually drag and drop all categories and subcategories into the order that you choose. Hover your mouse over the row for the category you?d like move, then drag and drop it into the order that you?d like. The plugin will use this order to sort your categories and subcategories on your shop and archive pages.

Q: Can I remove the category name from the nested layout? For example, if ?Game? is the parent category and it two sub-categories of ?Action? and ?Sport?, nested sections should be named ?Action? and ?Sport?, not ?Games ? Action? and ?Games ? Sport?.
A: Yep, this is certainly possible. While we don?t support customizations and these won?t be included via our support tickets, here?s a snippet that will remove the category title, and can get you started on further cust
